A uniquely tailored heli-skiing program dedicated to the knowledge and better understanding of technical backcountry skiing and snowboarding  Guests will ski with ACMG Full Guide and co-founder of WASA, Jonny Simms, an accomplished ski guide and mountain climber in a variety of terrain types and different snow packs. And just in case that was not enough professional skiers, coach, and co-founding partner of WASA, Ryan Oakden, will also join guests to provide his free skiing knowledge and backcountry experience to the group.

Pricing:

Included in the package is land transfer from Vancouver to Pemberton (2 hours approx.) and a 30 minute flight from Pemberton into the lodge, weather permitting. There are a few things to consider when purchasing a pair of heliskiing goggles.

Lens Color

One of the most challenging tests of visual discrimination is to identify a white object resting on a white background. Skiers and snowboarders consistently face a variation of this task, discerning subtle terrain changes within a fast-moving, snow-covered landscape. Goggles can provide a great advantage in this effort, because they come in a variety of tints that increase contrast and improve both visibility and depth perception under different lighting conditions. Each tint is suited to a particular type of lighting, for example

• Orange is considered to be the best all-around lens color for moderate to sunny conditions
• Amber and gold are great choices for low-to moderate-light conditions
• Rose and light-yellow lenses are well suited for overcast conditions and grey days
• Brown and grey are ideal for bluebird days

Ultraviolet Light (UV) Protection

Even on cloudy days, ultraviolet, or UV, light can harm your eyes, especially at high altitudes where the intensity of these rays is increased. Overexposure to UV rays can cause serious near-term problems, such as photokeratitis – a painful and dangerous condition that’s commonly known as snow blindness – or it can sow the seeds for eye diseases that will affect you in the long-term, including cataracts.

Skiers and riders are especially at risk, because the wide expanse of snow that blankets the slopes provides the perfect reflecting board for UV rays to do some serious damage. In fact, it’s estimated that snow and ice reflect as much as 80% of UV radiation, so it’s vital to choose ski goggles that block out 100% of these harmful rays and to wear your goggles even when it’s overcast.

Always check to see if the lenses are tapered. Progressively tapered lenses “straighten” out the light rays that refract (change direction) when they pass through the lens. Without this images may appear distorted, ultimately inducing eye fatigue.

To reduce the chance of fogging, manufacturers have come up with several features, some unique to particular companies. Different types of ventilation systems are employed, from common vents on the brow of the lens, ones that the wearer can manually regulate and even miniature, micro electronic, built in fans.

 The Story: Heliski Holiday first connected with Heliski Nepal back in 2001. Since then, founder Craig Calonica, former US Ski Race Team member and an accomplished Alpine climber set up shop in Patagonia and is now planning the first descent on Mt Olympus, Greece.

The plan was to do an exploration trip this year and begin running trips the following year, but Greece is having such a big winter, they didn’t want to miss it. With this in mind, they felt the need to share the riches of history in the making and are offering a special opportunity to be involved in the exploration and pioneering of skiing on one of the world’s most legendary mountains, which to say the least is extraordinary. The Olympus range is quite impressive, and somewhat shocking. Who would have ever thought Greece would have mountains like this, and with this kind of snow and terrain?

Guests will stay at Litohoro Olympus Resort that is located on the Aegean coast, and will fly straight from the hotel to the top of Olympus within minutes. The bars and restaurants in Greece are known for their lively and fun atmosphere thus making a nice addition to the overall experience.

All heliski weeks are Saturday to Saturday. Fly to Thessaloniki Greece, where transportation will be arranged to take you to our Hotel in Litochoro. At 18:00 meet with the guides for trip orientation and safety procedures. Ski Sunday through Friday and fly back home Saturday.

Arrival is at one of two international airports. Connecting flights to a smaller airport is common and from there a ground transfer usually required.  Guests are responsible to getting themselves to Canada and to the location where the ground transfer begins.

Connecting flight information and pre & post accommodation is offered by the heli-operator.  It is always best to arrange connecting flights with your local travel agent you might just get a better rate.  The operator also partners with a consortium of hotels, no need to make additional plans.

When it comes to deciding on number of days each heliskiing operator sets their own start and end dates however, relatively similar.  Some heli-skiing operators offer only 7 day experiences while the majorities mix it up from a 3 day heli holiday to a 7 day heliski holiday

Thinking about a heli holiday, bet you are wondering:  how safe is powder skiing by helicopter? How worried should one be about safety? What is the likelihood of an avalanche? These are legitimate questions. You will find that operators, while highlighting the great extent to which they go to be as safe as possible, do not brag about 100% safety records. Northern British Columbia is the natural choice for those looking to safeguard their heli-ski trip. With its consistently high annual snowfalls and abundant, expansive terrain choices, it’s the safest bet when all you want to do is ski/ride epic conditions. Furthermore, come between December until the beginning of February, when most of the storms roll in over this our part of the world, and they all but guarantee the deepest powder.
